The daylily Harold Steen is a tribute to one of the ambassadors of daylilies in Wisconsin. Harold has been a long time member and leader of the Daylily Society of Southeast Wisconsin and helped the Bay Area Daylily Buds develop their constitution and become an official non-profit organization. We are honored to name a daylily for Harold and we chose the best plant developed at Pinewood Gardens to date.
Daylily Harold Steen is a culmination of many years of breeding at Pinewood Gardens. This introduction combines some of our original introductions such as Northern Dawn, Upon This Rock, and Heir to the Throne. The result of this breeding has produced a daylily with many fine attributes. First, the flower is fabulous with a huge gold edge and a near white watermark. Second, the flowers are good openers. The large percentage of flowers that do open perfectly is amazing considering the enormous edge. Third, the plants showed consistent rebloom in 2012 and 2013. The 2013 bloom season began in mid July and continued through all of September. Fourth, Harold Steen has a high bud count for the large size flowers and good scapes. Fifth, Harold Steen is fertile both ways with at least average pod fertility. Sixth, the plants are vigorous, hardy, and dormant, – ideal for the northern gardener. Finally, Harold Steen has shown itself to be an excellent parent capable of producing seedlings in a variety of colors from lavender to peach to purple. Feedback from our customers has affirmed the great opening and huge edge. A few available in 2017.
